Birria Burger

Birria is a spicy and flavoursome Mexican beef stew, that’s slow-cooked until the meat is tender, this creates a juicy sauce which can be smothered on your dish. Traditionally it is served in a Taco with a dipping pot on the side made from the juices, but why stop there when this dish is so well loved?

Birria Burger

  • 1 Burger bun

  • 1 Beef burger

  • 50g Birria beef

  • 40g Santa Maria Cheddar Cheese Sauce

  • 30g Pickled slaw

For the slaw (makes for 10 portions)

  • 120g White cabbage

  • 120g Red Cabbage

  • 50g Onion

  • 10g Santa Maria Pickling Spice

  • 5G Coriander

For Birria beef (makes for 10 portions)

  • 1.5kg Braising beef

  • 250g Sliced Onion

  • 20g Garlic

  • 100g Diced Carrot

  • 40g Santa Maria Run & Dry Marinade Chilli

  • 10g Santa Maria Ancho Chilli

  • 1tsbp Santa Maria Oregano

  • 300g Diced Mixed Peppers

  • 10g Santa Maria Mexican Fajita Seasoning

  • 400g Tinned Tomatoes

TIP: In advance make slaw and braise Birria.Cook burger, top with warm Birria and cheese sauce. To build, toast bun and add crisp slaw to the base. Top with burger and serve with warm Birria sauce.

How to prepare

Here are our steps for recreating this dish:

  • Finely grate your cabbage and onion and chop your coriander to create your slaw. Once done, add the Santa Maria Pickling Spice to your slaw and set to one side

  • Move on to your Birria beef and mix together all the listed ingredients

  • The beef pattie needs roughly 20 mins to cook

  • Place your seasoned meat mix into a slow cooker or place into a pot and cover well.

  • Pre-heat the oven to 140 degrees, place everything in the oven and allow to cook for 5 hours.
